Navarrete & Berinchyk make weight Friday afternoon

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (May 18, 2024) — Mexico’s fighting cowboy, Emanuel “Vaquero” Navarrete, hopes to make some history tonight. Navarrete (38-1-1, 31 KOs) will face Ukraine’s Denys Berinchyk (18-0, 9 KOs) at Pechanga Arena San Diego for the vacant WBO lightweight world title.

If Navarrete wins, he’ll become the sixth Mexican-born fighter to win world titles in four weight classes, joining Canelo Alvarez, Jorge Arce, Erik Morales, Juan Manuel Marquez, and Leo Santa Cruz.

The co-feature will be contested for the vacant WBO Interim welterweight world title as hometown hero Giovani Santillan (32-0, 17 KOs) battles fellow unbeaten Brian Norman Jr. (25-0, 19 KOs). Santillan looks to join Paul Vaden as the only San Diego-born boxer to win a world title.

Navarrete-Berinchyk & Santillan-Norman will be broadcast LIVE on ESPN, ESPN Deportes & ESPN+ at 10:30 p.m. ET/7:30 p.m. PT.

The ESPN+-streamed undercard (7:10 p.m. ET/4:10 p.m. PT) features a showdown of undefeated heavyweights. U.S. Olympic silver medalist Richard Torrez Jr. (9-0, 9 KOs) will step up in class against Brandon Moore (14-0, 8 KOs) in an eight-rounder, which will air just before the co-feature.
