Spanish Club Challenges Aday Mara’s Thunder Eligibility as OKC Pushes Back

Oklahoma City Thunder rookie Aday Mara is at the center of an unusual international contract dispute just days before the NBA regular season begins. Basket Zaragoza said Friday that the 7-foot-3 center remains under contract with the Spanish club for the 2026-27 season and that it would formally oppose any request for an international transfer. Zaragoza says it previously communicated that position to the Spanish federation, FIBA, the NBA and Oklahoma City.

The Thunder strongly disagree. Oklahoma City said it has been advised by the NBA that Mara does not require clearance from Zaragoza because he spent the past three seasons playing NCAA basketball in the United States. Mara left Zaragoza in 2023, played two seasons at UCLA and then transferred to Michigan before Oklahoma City selected him No. 12 overall in the 2026 NBA Draft. The underlying contractual dispute dates back to his departure from Spain and remains unresolved.

The timing makes the disagreement especially noteworthy because Mara has been one of Oklahoma City’s most impressive preseason players. He averaged 13.4 points, 7.6 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 2.4 blocks across five preseason games while shooting 78.8 percent from the field. For now, the Thunder expect Mara to be available when the regular season begins. Unless a governing body intervenes, the dispute appears more likely to become a legal and financial fight than an immediate basketball absence—but that is now the key development to watch.
