Hornets Lock Up Brandon Miller With Five-Year, $209 Million Extension

The Charlotte Hornets made their clearest statement yet about the future of the franchise Monday, agreeing with Brandon Miller on a five-year, $209 million rookie-scale extension. The deal came before the NBA’s Oct. 19 extension deadline and keeps the 2023 No. 2 overall pick in Charlotte long term as the organization builds a new core following the offseason departure of LaMelo Ball.

Miller enters his fourth season after averaging a career-best 20.2 points, 4.9 rebounds and 3.3 assists in 65 games last year while making 204 three-pointers. He has averaged 19.0 points across his first three NBA seasons and is expected to take on an even larger offensive role alongside Kon Knueppel. Miller also enters opening week after offseason surgery on his left shoulder, but he participated in training camp and is expected to be available when Charlotte opens the season at Brooklyn.

The size of the extension makes the Hornets’ direction unmistakable. Charlotte is betting that Miller can grow from a productive scorer into the centerpiece of its next competitive team. With Ball gone, the offense now has a different hierarchy, and Miller’s combination of size, shooting and age makes him the logical player to lead it. The contract brings pressure, but it also removes any uncertainty about whom Charlotte expects to carry the franchise forward.
