RIYADH, Saudi Arabia — Canelo Alvarez is a world champion again. The Mexican superstar defeated previously unbeaten Christian Mbilli by unanimous decision Saturday at Kingdom Arena, reclaiming the WBC super middleweight title in his first fight since losing his undisputed championship to Terence Crawford in September 2025.
The judges scored the 12-round fight 115-112, 116-111 and 117-110 for Alvarez. Mbilli applied pressure and worked at a higher volume early, but Canelo gradually took control with sharper counterpunching, body work and cleaner power shots. A crisp uppercut staggered Mbilli in the seventh round, and Alvarez controlled much of the championship stretch. Mbilli was also deducted a point in the eighth for punching behind the head.
Alvarez improved to 64-3-2 and handed Mbilli the first loss of his professional career. More importantly, the victory puts Canelo back into the championship picture at 168 pounds after more than a year away from the ring. He did not name his next opponent afterward, leaving the division’s next major matchup open as contenders begin positioning themselves for a shot at boxing’s biggest star.
