David Benavidez Nears Three-Fight Deal, Targets Opetaia, Beterbiev and Usyk

David Benavidez says his next career move is taking shape, revealing that he is close to signing a three-fight contract that could position him for a run of blockbuster matchups after his December 12 cruiserweight unification bout with Michal Cieslak in Phoenix. Speaking on Brian Custer’s The Last Stand, Benavidez named Jai Opetaia, Artur Beterbiev and Oleksandr Usyk as the three opponents being discussed. He did not identify the promoter behind the proposed deal, and no contract has been officially announced.

The timing is significant because Benavidez has said the Cieslak fight will complete his current promotional arrangement with Sampson Lewkowicz and PBC. If he defeats Cieslak and adds the WBC cruiserweight title to his WBA and WBO belts, a showdown with Opetaia would carry enormous divisional stakes. Benavidez also remains interested in Beterbiev, while a potential Usyk fight could require a move to heavyweight depending on the terms.

The key distinction for fans is that this is a roadmap, not three signed fights. Still, Benavidez publicly saying he is about to enter a three-fight agreement makes his post-Cieslak future much clearer. First he must handle Cieslak; after that, the identity of his new promotional partner—and whether it can actually deliver Opetaia, Beterbiev or Usyk—becomes one of boxing’s most important business stories.
