Denzel Bentley Faces WBO Title Ultimatum After Appeal Is Denied

Denzel Bentley’s plan to carry the WBO middleweight title into his November 7 fight with Shane Mosley Jr. has hit a major roadblock. The WBO has denied Bentley’s appeal for permission to make a voluntary defense and has ordered him to proceed with mandatory challenger Yoenli Hernandez. Bentley now faces a short deadline to confirm the Hernandez fight or risk losing the championship.

The ruling creates a direct conflict with Bentley’s Zuffa Boxing plans. He signed a multi-fight deal with the promotion earlier this month and is scheduled to face Mosley Jr. at London’s Copper Box Arena. Bentley had argued that he should be allowed a voluntary defense before fulfilling the mandatory, but Hernandez’s team had already won a purse bid for the ordered title fight. With the appeal rejected, Bentley may have to choose between changing course and facing Hernandez or moving forward with the more lucrative Zuffa matchup without the WBO belt.

That decision could reshape the middleweight title picture quickly. Hernandez is unbeaten and positioned for his first world-title opportunity, while Bentley-Mosley remains an attractive matchup even without championship stakes. The key development now is no longer whether the WBO will grant Bentley an exception—it has said no. The next question is whether Bentley accepts the mandatory or vacates the title to stay on the November 7 Zuffa card.
