Deontay Wilder-Jai Opetaia Fight Explored for Fury-Joshua Undercard in Cardiff

A major heavyweight twist is being explored for the Tyson Fury-Anthony Joshua undercard. Former WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder and unbeaten Ring cruiserweight champion Jai Opetaia are in discussions for a potential co-feature on the December 11 event at Principality Stadium in Cardiff, according to The Ring. The proposed bout is not signed, but it would place one of boxing’s most dangerous punchers against a smaller, faster champion willing to test himself at heavyweight.

The timing makes the matchup especially intriguing. Wilder’s talks with Oleksandr Usyk have broken down, leaving the 40-year-old searching for another major assignment after winning two straight fights. Opetaia, meanwhile, stopped Noel Mikaelian in September and has been targeting a 2027 showdown with unified cruiserweight champion David Benavidez. A Wilder fight would allow Opetaia to stay active without necessarily abandoning that cruiserweight plan.

For the Fury-Joshua event, the appeal is obvious. Wilder brings name recognition, knockout power and history with Fury, while Opetaia brings an unbeaten record and the possibility of proving his skills translate against a true heavyweight puncher. The important distinction is that this remains an explored matchup rather than a finalized fight. If contracts follow, however, Fury-Joshua would gain a co-feature capable of generating significant interest on its own.
