Four-Star Guard Gene Roebuck Commits to Cal, Becomes Bears’ Highest-Ranked Recruit in Over a Decade

California landed a major piece for its future when four-star 2027 shooting guard Gene Roebuck committed to the Golden Bears, choosing Cal over finalists Gonzaga and Washington. The 6-foot-4 La Mirada, California standout is ranked No. 45 nationally and No. 9 among shooting guards in the Rivals Industry Rankings, making him Cal’s highest-ranked commitment in more than a decade.

Roebuck’s commitment gives coach Mark Madsen an important recruiting win after a competitive West Coast battle. He visited Washington on Sept. 11, Cal on Sept. 25 and Gonzaga on Oct. 3 before choosing Berkeley. Roebuck told Rivals that Cal’s belief in his ability to contribute immediately as a freshman and the staff’s long-term relationship with him helped separate the Golden Bears. He describes himself as an elite scorer who can play at his own pace while creating efficiently for teammates.

The production backs up that reputation. Roebuck averaged 22.5 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.7 assists as a junior at La Mirada while shooting 55 percent from the field. He also shot better than 40 percent from three on the Adidas 3SSB circuit. For Cal, this is more than its first 2027 commitment—it is evidence that Madsen can beat nationally prominent programs for a top-50 prospect who expects to help push the Bears back toward the NCAA tournament.
