Karl-Anthony Towns ‘Very Disappointed’ as Knicks Put Contract Extension Talks on Hold

Karl-Anthony Towns made clear Sunday that the New York Knicks’ decision to pause contract-extension negotiations did not sit well with him. Speaking after practice, Towns said the announcement was “news to me” and that he was “very disappointed,” adding a fresh and more personal layer to a contract situation that had already been hanging over the defending NBA champions.

The Knicks announced Friday that they were putting extension talks with eligible players on hold while focusing on the start of the season. Towns is eligible for an extension worth as much as roughly $276 million, while reports have placed New York’s offer around four years and $200 million. The six-time All-Star holds a player option for 2027-28, giving both sides significant financial decisions ahead even if negotiations eventually restart.

The new angle is not that talks stalled — that was already known — but Towns’ reaction to how the organization handled the pause. New York is trying to defend its championship while staying below the second luxury-tax apron, and Towns is one of the roster’s most expensive pieces. That makes this more than a preseason contract dispute: if the gap in valuation remains, questions about Towns’ long-term future could follow the Knicks well beyond opening night.
