Brooklyn, NY – Saturday night, Keith Thurman defeated Danny Garcia by split decision to unify the WBA and WBC welterweight championship belts in front of a sold-out crowd at the Barclays Center
Thurman is known to be one of the hardest punchers in the welterweight division but, instead of his power, he used his boxing IQ to outbox Garcia in twelve.
Thurman used his boxing ability to frustrate Garcia. Garcia felt his best chance of winning was by attacking Thurman’s body. Garcia had some success attacking the body but, Thurman’s movement and footwork made Garcia abandon his plan. Garcia became frustrated and only attempted to land that one big shot. Thurman boxing ability and counter punching gave him a split decision win. The judge’s scored (116-112) and (115-113) in favored of Thurman and (115-113) in favored of Garcia.
Thurman improves his record (28-0, 22 Ko’s) and took Garcia’s WBC belt to unify it with his WBA belt. Garcia, now (33-1, 19 Ko’s) suffers his first loss as a professional.
