Klay Thompson Hits Overtime Game-Winner as Heat Erase 20-Point Deficit Against Clippers

Klay Thompson supplied the final shot of a dramatic Miami comeback Wednesday night, burying a corner three-pointer with one second remaining in overtime to lift the Heat past the Los Angeles Clippers 117-116 in Inglewood. Thompson finished with 30 points and eight made threes, including the decisive basket that completed Miami’s rally from a 20-point second-quarter deficit.

The Clippers had control for long stretches and still led by 10 with about four and a half minutes remaining in regulation. Miami fought back to force overtime, but Darius Garland’s floater put Los Angeles ahead 116-112 with 1:19 left in the extra period. Bam Adebayo scored inside, then Giannis Antetokounmpo collected a defensive rebound with 3.8 seconds remaining. Following a timeout, Antetokounmpo found Thompson open in the left corner on the inbounds play. Thompson connected, and the Clippers’ desperation attempt at the buzzer missed.

Adebayo led Miami with season highs of 35 points and 10 rebounds, while Antetokounmpo contributed 27 points, 14 rebounds and six assists. Garland paced the Clippers with 26 points, but Los Angeles has now lost seven consecutive games following its season-opening win. Miami, meanwhile, has won three of four after an 0-4 start. The larger takeaway is not simply another clutch Thompson three: the Heat are showing they can survive poor stretches and win with several different late-game options.
