The Los Angeles Lakers have parted ways with Coach Darwin Ham after their first-round playoff loss to the Denver Nuggets. There has been a lot of debate among sports analysts and fans over the past few days about why Ham was let go, despite making it to the playoffs twice and to the Conference Finals in his first year as coach.
Reports suggest that he was criticized for inconsistent rotations, poor game plans, lack of in-game adjustments, and defensive principles. Some people believe that Lebron James and Anthony Davis had a hand in Ham’s departure, but ultimately, it was the owner’s decision.
In truth, Ham is not to blame for the Lakers’ poor performance against the reigning champions. If you paid attention to the first three games of the Lakers vs Nuggets series, it’s clear that the players failed to perform, especially two of the starters, Austin Reaves and D’Angelo Russel. These players lack consistency, which is not solely a reflection of the coach or coaching staff. Additionally, Lebron James has shown disrespect towards Ham throughout the season by not participating in huddles called by him or wanting to dictate plays, which undermines Ham’s guidance. However, Ham is to blame for his lack of assertiveness and inability to control his players.
The Lakers lack discipline, which is reflected in their game, and coaches are supposed to gain control over that. While Ham brought the Lakers to the Conference Finals to face the best team in the league, he lacks the ability to control things on the court, and that’s a problem. Nonetheless, we should not forget that he achieved impressive results with the team, and that should count for something.
