Five-Star Center Lewis Uvwo Commits to Providence Over Kentucky, Baylor

Providence landed one of the biggest recruiting victories in program history Wednesday when five-star center Lewis Uvwo committed to the Friars over Kentucky, Baylor and California. The 6-foot-11 Prolific Prep standout is ranked No. 7 nationally and the No. 1 center in the 2027 class by 247Sports, giving first-year Providence coach Bryan Hodgson an elite interior building block.

Uvwo’s rise has been remarkably fast. Originally from Nigeria, he began playing basketball only a few years ago before moving to the United States and emerging as one of the nation’s premier defensive prospects. His length, athleticism and timing made him a dominant rim protector on the Nike EYBL circuit, where he earned 17U Defensive Player of the Year honors after averaging more than five blocks per game. He also helped Nightrydas reach the Peach Jam semifinals.

The commitment is significant because Providence beat multiple national powers for a prospect capable of changing games defensively from Day 1. Uvwo becomes only the third five-star recruit Providence has landed during the 247Sports era, joining Ricky Ledo and Kris Dunn, and he is Hodgson’s first top-10 commitment with the Friars. For a program trying to climb nationally in the Big East, landing the top center in the class is the kind of recruiting win that can change expectations quickly.
