Matthysse lost his previous two title opportunities when he was upset by Danny Garcia (2013) and Viktor Postol (2015). Matthysse now bein train by Joel Diaz, reclaims glory as he won the Vacant WBA Welterweight World Championship belt when he knocked out Tewa Kiram in the eighth round.

Kiriam was controlling the fight with his length and jab, but both fighters struggle to get any consistent rhythm. Fans became anxious for action, and the fighters started to hear the Boo-Birds. During the eight round, Matthysse landed a right hand that dropped Kiram. Karim was able to beat the count but, Matthysse was able to finish the fight with a left jab that drooped Kiram again.
