Mikel Brown Jr. Scores 15 in Long-Awaited Nets Preseason Debut
Brooklyn Nets rookie Mikel Brown Jr. finally made his preseason debut Wednesday night and gave the franchise an encouraging first look at its No. 6 overall pick. Brown came off the bench against the Miami Heat after missing Brooklyn’s first three preseason games with a left ankle injury and scored 15 points in just over 18 minutes. He shot 4-for-7 from the field, made two three-pointers and added two assists and two steals without committing a turnover.
The Nets lost the preseason finale 144-128, but Brown’s performance mattered more than the result for a rebuilding team that invested a top-six pick in the 20-year-old guard. Head coach Jordi Fernández praised Brown’s poise, pace and communication after the game. Brown had spent his time sidelined learning the system and studying teammates, and that preparation showed as he played under a minutes restriction without looking overwhelmed.
Brooklyn does not need Brown to become a finished product immediately. What the Nets needed Wednesday was evidence that the ankle issue had not stalled his transition to the NBA, and they got it. With the regular season approaching, Brown now enters the next phase of his development: earning a larger role while proving he can provide efficient scoring and playmaking against NBA rotations rather than just preseason competition.
