Ryan Garcia Says Floyd Mayweather Agreed to WBC Welterweight Title Fight

Ryan Garcia says a blockbuster fight with Floyd Mayweather has moved beyond preliminary talks. The reigning WBC welterweight champion posted Wednesday that he and Mayweather have agreed to a professional bout at 147 pounds with Garcia’s title and Mayweather’s unbeaten 50-0 record at stake. Garcia also shared that he had just spoken with Mayweather by phone. The claim marks a significant change from October 7, when Garcia said Mayweather had reached out and talks were only beginning.

There are still major reasons to treat the matchup as unconfirmed rather than official. Mayweather has not publicly announced the agreement, and no date, venue, broadcaster or signed contract has been revealed. The WBC also has not confirmed that it would sanction Mayweather, who turns 50 in February and has not competed in a sanctioned professional fight since stopping Conor McGregor in 2017, for an immediate title opportunity.

If those hurdles are cleared, the fight would instantly become one of boxing’s biggest commercial events and dramatically alter Garcia’s immediate plans. Garcia has also been linked to WBA champion Teofimo Lopez, whose team recently petitioned the WBA for permission to pursue their unification. For now, the important distinction is simple: Garcia says both fighters have agreed, but boxing fans should wait for confirmation from Mayweather, the WBC and the event’s organizers before treating the fight as finalized.
