Teofimo Lopez vs. Lindolfo Delgado Ordered for Vacant IBF Junior Welterweight Title
With Richardson Hitchins relinquishing the belt, boxing’s title picture at 140 pounds has a new pair of names at the center of it. The IBF has officially ordered Teofimo Lopez to face Mexico’s Lindolfo Delgado for the vacant junior welterweight world title, according to reports that surfaced Monday evening.
It’s a massive opportunity for “The Takeover,” who finds himself in a unique position. Multiple reports indicate Lopez is no longer listed on Top Rank’s roster of signed fighters, likely making him a free agent heading into negotiations. That could trigger one of the more interesting free agency bidding wars in recent memory, with Zuffa Boxing, PBC, Matchroom, and Riyadh Season all expected to take a hard look.
Delgado (24-0, 16 KOs) is the IBF’s top-ranked contender and has been waiting patiently for his world title shot. The Mexican was originally slated to face Hitchins back in February before the reigning champion fell ill and withdrew from the fight. Hitchins then chose to move up to welterweight rather than make a mandatory defense, clearing the path for Delgado to finally get his shot.
For Lopez, this is a chance at redemption. The Brooklyn-based star struggled through an uneven 2025 campaign and has not looked like his prime self in recent outings. A clean, motivated Teofimo is still one of the most dangerous men in the division and could remind fans why he was once the undisputed lightweight champion of the world.
The matchup is a clear crossroads fight. If Lopez wins, he re-enters the pound-for-pound conversation and sets up huge money fights with Shakur Stevenson and others. If Delgado wins, he becomes Mexico’s newest world champion at a loaded weight class.
Teofimo Lopez (21-1, 13 KOs) is a former undisputed lightweight champion who shocked boxing with an upset decision win over Vasiliy Lomachenko in 2020 and later captured the WBO junior welterweight title in 2023. Lindolfo Delgado (24-0, 16 KOs) is an undefeated Mexican contender and former Olympian looking to claim his first world title.
