Ben Whittaker Survives Late Scare, Beats Conor Wallace to Earn IBF World Title Shot

Ben Whittaker took the biggest step of his professional career Saturday in Birmingham, defeating Conor Wallace by unanimous decision in an IBF light-heavyweight final eliminator. The judges scored the fight 117-111, 116-112 and 115-113 for Whittaker, who controlled much of the contest with his speed and boxing ability before Wallace turned the closing rounds into a serious test.

The most revealing moment came in the 12th. Wallace hurt Whittaker badly and forced the unbeaten Olympic silver medalist into survival mode as the crowd came alive. Whittaker stayed on his feet and reached the final bell, preserving the victory and moving into mandatory position for unified WBA, IBF and WBO champion Dmitry Bivol. An immediate title fight is not guaranteed because Bivol has other obligations, but Whittaker has now earned his place in the championship queue.

The result raises Whittaker’s stock while also exposing the next area he must improve. His talent was obvious for most of the fight, but Wallace showed that elite-level pressure can create problems late. For a fighter known for flair and highlight-reel moments, Saturday delivered something potentially more valuable: twelve hard rounds, adversity and a victory that moves him from rising attraction to legitimate world-title contender.
