Giannis Makes Heat Debut as Miami Rolls Past Raptors 129-105

The Giannis Antetokounmpo era in Miami finally reached the court Saturday night. Antetokounmpo made his Heat preseason debut in Quebec City and needed only 14 minutes to give fans a glimpse of how dramatically he could reshape Miami’s offense. The two-time MVP finished with nine points, four rebounds and seven assists while going a perfect 3-for-3 from the field as the Heat defeated the Toronto Raptors 129-105.

The assist total may have been the most intriguing part of the debut. Antetokounmpo repeatedly created opportunities for teammates rather than forcing his own offense, and Heat coach Erik Spoelstra praised that dimension of his game afterward. Miami’s new star has always been devastating in transition and around the rim, but placing that pressure alongside Bam Adebayo and the Heat’s other weapons could create easier shots throughout the lineup. Saturday was only preseason, yet the early chemistry offered a first real look at what Miami envisioned when it acquired him.

There is no reason to overreact to 14 exhibition minutes, but this was more meaningful than an ordinary preseason result. Miami fans have spent the offseason imagining how Antetokounmpo would fit into Spoelstra’s system. For one night, the answer was encouraging: he didn’t need a huge scoring total to control the game, and the Heat’s new era opened with a convincing win.
