EA Sports Brings Back Fight Night Boxing Franchise After 15-Year Absence

EA Sports officially confirmed Tuesday that its popular Fight Night boxing video game franchise is returning, ending a 15-year absence that began after Fight Night Champion was released in 2011. The announcement came October 20 through the newly launched official EA Sports Fight Night account, which told fans, “Fight Night is coming back,” alongside an image of boxing gloves hanging above a ring and the tagline “The fight is never over.”

The confirmation is significant because boxing fans have spent years hearing rumors about a possible revival without an official commitment from EA. Fight Night Champion, released for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in March 2011, became the final entry in a series that helped define boxing games during the 2000s. Since then, EA Sports has focused its combat-sports development primarily on its UFC franchise while Undisputed emerged as the most prominent modern boxing game.

EA did not announce a release date, developer, platforms, gameplay features or fighter roster Tuesday, so any claims about those details remain speculation. The announcement nevertheless represents the first concrete confirmation that a new Fight Night project is moving forward. For boxing, the franchise’s return could provide another major mainstream platform for current fighters and introduce a new generation of fans to the sport. The next major development will be EA revealing when the game arrives—and which boxers make the roster.
