Giannis Antetokounmpo Makes Heat History With 31-Point Triple-Double
Giannis Antetokounmpo delivered his biggest all-around performance yet in a Miami Heat uniform Friday night, finishing with 31 points, 17 rebounds and 10 assists in a 145-125 NBA Cup victory over the Indiana Pacers. Antetokounmpo shot 13-for-19 from the field as Miami earned its second straight win and its first home victory of the season.
The stat line also made Heat history. According to NBA.com, Antetokounmpo became the first player in franchise history to record at least 30 points, 15 rebounds and 10 assists while shooting 70 percent or better from the field. Bam Adebayo added 27 points and nine rebounds, while Klay Thompson scored 25 and hit seven three-pointers. Miami took control with a 22-7 run to close the first half, then opened the third quarter 10-0 and never allowed Indiana to regain control.
The performance is another sign that Miami’s new centerpiece is settling into his surroundings after the blockbuster offseason move from Milwaukee. The Heat opened the season slowly, but a dominant night from Antetokounmpo showed the ceiling of an offense that can surround his pressure at the rim with Adebayo, Thompson and multiple playmakers. In the first night of NBA Cup group play, Miami’s new superstar produced a franchise first.
