Stephen Curry Leads Historic 25-Point Comeback as Warriors Beat Lakers in NBA Cup

Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors turned a disastrous first quarter into a historic NBA Cup comeback Friday night, rallying from 25 points down to beat the Los Angeles Lakers 112-95 at Chase Center. Curry finished with 31 points, six assists and eight made three-pointers as Golden State opened Group Play with one of the wildest reversals of the young season.

Los Angeles dominated the opening quarter 38-15 behind Luka Dončić, who scored 21 points with five threes and five assists in the period. Then the game completely flipped. Golden State answered by winning the second quarter by the identical 38-15 margin, took control with a 22-8 closing run in the third and eventually pushed its lead to 17. Dončić finished with 37 points, but the Warriors’ bench produced 50 points and Golden State forced 20 Lakers turnovers. Curry also passed Dominique Wilkins for 18th on the NBA’s career scoring list during the fourth quarter.

The comeback carried historical weight: according to NBA.com, Golden State recorded the largest margin of victory in the shot-clock era by a team that trailed by at least 20 points at the end of the first quarter. For an NBA Cup opener, Curry and the Warriors made an emphatic early statement—and turned what looked like a Lakers rout into a runaway victory of their own.
