Jalen Williams Needs Surgery for Fractured Fibula and Dislocated Ankle; Cason Wallace Also Sidelined
The Oklahoma City Thunder received the diagnosis they feared Monday after All-Star Jalen Williams was stretchered off late in Sunday’s 108-101 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers. General manager Sam Presti announced that Williams suffered a fractured left fibula and dislocated left ankle and will undergo surgery. Oklahoma City did not provide a firm return timetable.
The injury came with 1:14 remaining when Williams drove toward the basket, absorbed contact and landed awkwardly. The Thunder’s problems did not stop there. Starting guard Cason Wallace suffered a torn labrum in his left shoulder earlier in the game and also will require surgery. Wallace, an All-Defensive Second Team selection last season, had started all three games for Oklahoma City after signing a five-year extension this fall.
Losing two starters at once dramatically changes the early outlook for a Thunder team that opened 3-0. Williams is a former All-Star and All-NBA selection playing on a five-year maximum contract, while Wallace has become one of Oklahoma City’s most important perimeter defenders. Presti did not rule either player out for the season, but both are expected to miss significant time. The immediate question now becomes how much of the burden Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Oklahoma City’s celebrated depth can absorb while two core pieces recover.
