Murat Gassiev Says WBA Heavyweight Title Status Is Still Unclear Ahead of Fury-Joshua

Murat Gassiev says the status of his WBA heavyweight championship remains unclear as Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua prepare for their December 11 showdown in Cardiff. Gassiev said he was surprised by reports that Fury-Joshua could be contested for the WBA title he currently holds and that, after reaching out to the sanctioning body, he still does not have a definitive explanation.

The uncertainty adds another layer to an already complicated heavyweight title picture. Gassiev was elevated after Oleksandr Usyk vacated the WBA belt and has publicly maintained that championship matters should be settled in the ring. At the Fury-Joshua launch, however, Gassiev noted that he saw The Ring belt displayed rather than a WBA championship, leaving him unsure whether the December blockbuster will actually involve his title.

For fans, the important distinction is that no clear resolution has been announced. Fury-Joshua remains one of boxing’s biggest events, but attaching a world championship to it while the current titleholder says he has not received a clear answer creates avoidable confusion. Until the WBA formally clarifies Gassiev’s status and the championship stakes for December 11, reports that Fury-Joshua is definitively for Gassiev’s belt should be treated cautiously.
