Raptors Lock Up Former Houston Star Jamal Shead With $24 Million Extension

The Toronto Raptors have reportedly secured one of their most dependable young guards for the long term, agreeing to a three-year, $24 million contract extension with Jamal Shead. ESPN reported Thursday that Shead’s agent, KJ Smith, confirmed the agreement, which will keep the 24-year-old under contract with Toronto through the 2029-30 season.

Shead has steadily carved out an important role since entering the NBA in 2024. Last season, he appeared in all 82 regular-season games and averaged 6.6 points, 5.4 assists and 1.7 rebounds. His impact went beyond those numbers: Shead recorded 354 assists while coming off the bench, the most in the NBA last season and a Raptors franchise record for a reserve. He also took on a larger role during Toronto’s first-round playoff series, averaging 9.0 points, 5.0 assists and 1.4 steals across seven games.

For basketball fans in Houston, Shead’s rise carries extra significance. Before reaching the NBA, he developed into a standout at the University of Houston under Kelvin Sampson, earning national recognition for his defense and leadership. After falling to the second round of the 2024 NBA Draft, Shead has turned that opportunity into long-term NBA security. Toronto’s investment is another reminder that draft position does not determine a player’s ceiling — and the former Cougar now has a $24 million commitment to prove it.
