World Boxing Unveils LA28 Olympic Qualification Pathway Under Gennadiy Golovkin
World Boxing has laid out the road to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, approving a new strategic plan and a qualification system that will begin in 2027 under president Gennadiy Golovkin.
The organization’s Executive Board approved its 2026–2029 Strategic Plan, proposed 2027 budget and international competition calendar during meetings in Budva, Montenegro. The Olympic qualification period will run from April 1, 2027 through May 31, 2028. The first 44 LA28 quota places will be awarded at the 2027 World Boxing Championships in Astana, Kazakhstan.
Another 112 Olympic places will be awarded through five continental qualifiers in Guiyang, China; Istanbul, Türkiye; Accra, Ghana; Apia, Samoa; and Ontario, California. Two final World Qualification Tournaments are planned for Rome and Budapest in 2028. For U.S. amateur boxers, coaches and officials, the Ontario event is especially significant because it will serve as the Pan American qualifying tournament. World Boxing also emphasized athlete welfare, officiating standards, education, technology and competition integrity as priorities while the organization prepares to oversee Olympic boxing at LA28.
