Five-Star DeMarcus Henry Commits to North Carolina, Gives Michael Malone First 2027 Recruit

North Carolina landed a major recruiting victory Friday when five-star forward DeMarcus Henry committed to the Tar Heels over Arkansas, Kentucky and Louisville. The 6-foot-7 Charlotte native announced his decision on ESPN’s NBA Today on his 18th birthday, giving first-year UNC coach Michael Malone his first commitment in the 2027 class.

Henry is one of the elite prospects in the country. ESPN ranks him No. 2 nationally, while the 247Sports Composite places him No. 3. He averaged 24 points per game last season at AZ Compass Prep and produced 19.3 points and 9.2 rebounds per game on the Nike EYBL circuit. Henry also played for the United States at the 2026 FIBA U18 AmeriCup. His combination of size, defensive versatility and playmaking has made him one of the most coveted wings in the class.

The commitment is a significant early statement for Malone, the longtime NBA coach who took over at North Carolina this year. Henry grew up in Charlotte and said UNC’s vision matched what he wanted, specifically citing Malone’s winning mentality. For the Tar Heels, landing a top-three national prospect gives the new staff an immediate centerpiece for its first full recruiting class and keeps one of the nation’s best players connected to his home state.
