Houston Comets Keep Rachid Meziane as Head Coach for 2027 WNBA Return

The Houston Comets will keep Rachid Meziane as head coach when the franchise begins play in Houston in 2027, general manager Morgan Tuck confirmed Friday. Meziane coached the Connecticut Sun for the past two seasons and will relocate with the organization as it transitions to the Comets, giving Houston continuity on the basketball side while it builds toward its WNBA return.

Meziane went 22-66 during two rebuilding seasons in Connecticut, but Tuck said the organization’s goal is to assemble the best possible staff and become a playoff team next season. Houston is retaining more than its coach: Tuck remains general manager, while Jennifer Rizzotti is continuing with the organization as president of basketball operations. The group now moves into an offseason with significant resources, including more than $5.5 million in cap space and one of the strongest positions in the 2027 WNBA Draft lottery.

For Houston, the decision means the Comets can focus on roster construction instead of installing an entirely new basketball operation. The franchise shares the best odds with Toronto for the No. 1 pick and is guaranteed to select no lower than third. With the Comets’ new branding unveiled this week and Toyota Center awaiting their return, keeping Meziane establishes another important piece of the organization before free agency, the draft and training camp.
