Jalen Suggs Avoids Major Knee Damage but Will Miss at Least Two Weeks

The Orlando Magic received encouraging news Monday after Jalen Suggs’ frightening non-contact knee injury. An MRI revealed a mild bone bruise in Suggs’ right knee with no other structural damage, the team announced. The guard will be reevaluated in two weeks after his knee buckled while he attempted a transition layup during the fourth quarter of Sunday’s 111-102 win over the New York Knicks.

The diagnosis is a relief considering how serious the play initially appeared, but the timing creates another early challenge for Orlando. Suggs has averaged 8.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 5.7 assists through three games and remains one of the Magic’s most important perimeter defenders. Orlando is already without Paolo Banchero, who is expected to miss multiple weeks with a high ankle sprain.

That combination leaves new coach Sean Sweeney trying to navigate the opening weeks without two core players. Orlando did finish off its first victory of the season after Suggs left Sunday, but replacing his point-of-attack defense and playmaking for at least the next two weeks will require more from the rest of the backcourt. The best news for the Magic is that Monday’s MRI found no ligament or other structural damage, turning what initially looked potentially devastating into an injury with a much more manageable outlook.
