Ryan Garcia-Teofimo Lopez in Advanced Talks for Early 2027 Welterweight Unification

Ryan Garcia and Teofimo Lopez are reportedly moving closer to a major welterweight title showdown. According to a late October 15 report from The Ring’s Mike Coppinger, the two champions are now in advanced talks to meet in the first quarter of 2027. Garcia currently holds the WBC welterweight title, while Lopez owns the WBA Super championship, giving the proposed matchup legitimate unification stakes as well as considerable commercial appeal.

The negotiations are meaningful, but the fight is not signed yet. No exact date, venue or broadcaster has been announced, and Lopez still has an unresolved WBA obligation involving mandatory challenger Jack Catterall. The WBA ordered Lopez-Catterall negotiations in September, creating a potential obstacle if Lopez chooses to pursue the larger Garcia fight. Coppinger indicated he expects Garcia-Lopez to happen regardless of the WBA situation, but that remains an expectation rather than a sanctioning-body ruling.

For boxing fans, the appeal is obvious: two of the sport’s biggest personalities, both holding major welterweight belts, would meet with control of the 147-pound division at stake. Garcia is coming off his September stoppage of Conor Benn, while Lopez captured the WBA title from Rolando Romero in August. The next development to watch is whether advanced talks become a signed agreement—and how the WBA handles Catterall’s mandatory claim.
